Yes, Tik Tok is right—rosemary really can heal wounds

Reading time: 1 minute

It’s not just the stuff of urban myth—rosemary really can heal wounds.

It’s been trending on social media platforms for a while, and now scientists have demonstrated all those posts are true: rosemary serum really can speed wound healing and, best of all, it does so without leaving a scar.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine were intrigued by thousands of posts on Tik Tok and Instagram that were promoting rosemary and rosemary extract for skincare and wound healing.

So, they decided to find out if the claims could be verified by science.  They tested a cream made with carnosic acid, an antioxidant in rosemary, on laboratory mice, and found that it accelerated wound closure and helped regenerate structures such as hair follicles, oil glands, and cartilage. The scientists also found that the compound activated a skin nerve sensor known as TRPA1, which had previously been linked to the ability to heal without scars.

Other herbs, such as oregano and thyme, also had wound-healing abilities, but none were as effective as rosemary.
