A great new ‘wonder drug’ for heart flutter is nothing of the sort. Multaq (dronedarone) is only as half as effective as existing drugs, and it’s certainly no safer. This is a major blow for its manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, which has been touting Multaq as a wonder drug for other heart problems, too. But researchers from the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles discovered that the new drug was only half as effective as the current standard drug, Cordarone (amiodarone) for atrial fibrillation, or heart flutter. Instead of becoming the new standard therapy, Multaq should be used only as a back-up, say the researchers. (Source: Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2010; 55: 1569-76).
