Antibiotics are the most prescribed drugs for infants—and they’re also the most likely to cause inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) when the child grows.
Children given antibiotics to treat a respiratory virus suffered major disruption to the gut microbiome of bacteria. When that happens, gut fungal microbiota can flourish, and this can lead to inflammatory diseases and obesity later in life, say researchers from the University of Helsinki.
The most common fungal overgrowth is Candida albicans, linked to a range of gut disorders.
The researchers tracked the health of a group of children who were treated for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), some of whom were prescribed antibiotics.
