Keep your magnesium levels high. The mineral helps ward off chronic disease and protects your DNA.
Magnesium keeps in check levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that damages our genes and makes us more susceptible to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, gastrointestinal problems, a range of cancers and diabetes.
We need to be consuming more than the recommended daily dose of 300mg, say researchers from the University of South Australia, and we can achieve this by supplementing, or eating dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans and dark chocolate.
They established the importance of magnesium when they took blood samples from 172 middle-aged people. People with blood levels of magnesium below 18mg/L displayed increased DNA damage.
It’s also important to increase your folate and B12 levels as these complement magnesium’s good work.
