Why you don’t need drugs for knee arthritis

Reading time: 1 minute

If you’re suffering from arthritis in the knee, you don’t have to take drugs: there are plenty of other options that are just as good at easing pain and helping with movement.

Knee braces, water therapy, and exercise are every bit as effective as painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, and they don’t come with the risk of life-debilitating side effects, say researchers from the First People’s Hospital of Neijiang in China.

They took another look at 139 clinical trials involving nearly 10,000 participants which had reviewed 12 non-drug therapies for knee osteoarthritis, including laser therapy, electrical stimulation, knee braces, insoles, kinesiology tape, water-based therapy, exercise, and ultrasound.

Knee braces ranked highest overall, showing strong results in reducing pain, improving joint function, and easing stiffness, while hydrotherapy—exercises or treatments in warm water—was the best for pain relief. Regular exercise also delivered consistent benefits, improving both pain levels and physical function.

Some advanced treatments, such as high-intensity laser therapy and shock wave therapy, provided moderate improvements. In contrast, ultrasound consistently ranked as the least effective option.
