Why eggs are good for your heart

Reading time: 1 minute

Eating an egg a day is officially good for you.  Once demonised as a major cause of heart disease, eggs in fact prevent the problem by raising levels of the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol.

Researchers have discovered that regular egg-eaters are far less likely to suffer from heart disease or stroke because they have higher levels of a protein that ‘builds’ HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol.

A research team from Peking University analysed blood samples from 4,778 people, of whom 3,401 had cardiovascular disease (CVD).  Those who regularly ate eggs had higher levels of APOA1 (apolipoprotein A1), a building block for HDL cholesterol.

Although heart advisory groups have been advocating egg-eating for a while, the Chinese researchers are among the first to explore the biological processes that are started by eating an egg a day.
