Giving high-dose vitamin D to Covid-19 patients could reduce the numbers needing intensive care treatment by as much as 60 percent. It could also halve the number of Covid deaths.
A form of the vitamin, calcifediol or D3, which is usually given to treat chronic kidney failure, could help reduce the severity of a Covid-19 infection, a new study claims.
It’s been tested on 551 Covid patients at a hospital in Barcelona, who were given 532 mcg calcifediol on admission and 266 mcg on four further days, and compared to 379 other Covid patients, who were instead given standard treatment.
Around 15 percent of those given standard care died, compared to 6.5 percent given calcifediol, while 5 percent given the vitamin needed intensive care treatment compared to 21 percent in the standard care group, researchers from the University of Barcelona reported.
The lack of vitamin D has been cited as a reason why more people in the black and Asian communities suffer severe reactions to a Covid infection.
