Even four-year-olds are drinking the equivalent of half a bathtub of sugary drinks every year, says the UK’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey.
Teenagers – aged between 11 and 18 years – are drinking three times the recommended limit, and sugary drinks are their main source of added sugar. Younger children, aged from four years to 11, and adults are both drinking around twice the maximum recommended amount of added sugar.
Obese children are five times more likely to become obese adults, and carrying too much weight increases the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, studies have shown.
