Try kimchi to get rid of the belly fat

Reading time: 1 minute

Got a fat tum?  Eating kimchi—fermented vegetables, such as cabbage—three times a day could get rid of it.

The food counters belly fat, and three servings reduces levels of abdominal fat, say researchers from the Chung Ang University in South Korea.  Regular kimchi eaters are 11 percent less likely to be overweight.

The greatest effects were seen in those who ate kimchi three times a day compared to those who ate it just once or twice.

In a study of around 115,000 Koreans who were over the age of 40, the researchers said that a 50g—or one-third of a cup—serving of cabbage, radish or watery kimchi had a positive effect on weight and abdominal fat, especially if it was in three meals every day.

For the study, abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference greater than 35 inches in men and 33 inches in women.  The US takes a more generous view and calculates abdominal obesity from 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women.
