Treat IBS with diet changes—not drugs

Reading time: 1 minute

If you suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), don’t bother with the drugs—they don’t work.

Instead, a more effective approach is a change of diet, say researchers at the University of Gothenburg.

Several dietary approaches were tested against the best medication for some of IBS’s worst symptoms on a group of around 300 IBS sufferers.

Around 78 percent of those who followed standard IBS dietary advice—eat small and frequent meals, and avoid coffee, alcohol, and fizzy drinks—reported an improvement in symptoms, as did 71 percent of those who followed a low-carb and high protein diet.  Just 58 percent in the drug group reported improvements.
