Too much calcium isn’t so good for our bones

Reading time: 1 minute

The optimum amount is within the range of 275 to 780 mg a day for men, and 250 to 650 mg for women, and these give the best protection.

Strangely, people who ate more than that seemed to have a higher risk of a fracture or developing osteoporosis, researchers from the China Health and Nutrition survey have discovered.

The source of the calcium also seemed to matter: rather than getting it from milk and dairy products, as we’re often encouraged to do, the 6,210 participants in the survey who had the most protection were those who got their calcium from plants and vegetables.

Their findings point back to the same recommendations we keep on under-lining: eat more greens.
