Drinking up to three cups of coffee a day can protect you from a range of ‘cardiometabolic’ diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke.
Three cups of coffee seem to be the optimum level as that gives you around 200 to 300 mg of caffeine, which has the most protective effect.
People drinking three cups a day had a 48 percent reduced risk of developing a cardiometabolic disease compared to those who drank less than 100 mg of caffeine.
Researchers from Suzhou Medical College in China analysed data from the UK Biobank and assessed the coffee consumption and health of 172,315 people, and of 188.091 others who also drank tea. They discovered that those consuming up to 300mg of caffeine every day had the lowest risk of cardiometabolic disease.
People with a cardiometabolic condition are between four to seven times more likely to die prematurely—so start drinking coffee or tea for that caffeine boost, the researchers say.
