The supplement that can reverse liver disease

Reading time: 1 minute

If you suffer from fatty liver disease, start supplementing with B3 (niacin)—it will counteract it, a major new study has discovered.

Around 30 percent of people suffer from metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MASLB), and it’s common in people with type 2 diabetes or are obese—but medicine hasn’t had an effective response.

Scientists at UNIST in South Korea have identified a key genetic driver of the disease—and its antidote.  They tested around 150 pharmaceuticals but only B3 supplements effectively shut it down.

They have isolated a molecule, microRNA-93 (miR-93), as a central regulator in MASLD that drives fat buildup, inflammation, and scarring in the liver by suppressing SIRT1, a gene that plays a key role in managing fat metabolism inside liver cells.

None of the 150 FDA-approved drugs countered miR-93 activity—but B3 supplements did.  In one study on mice given niacin, the researchers saw miR-93 levels drop sharply, while SIRT1 activity increased. This helped restore normal fat-processing pathways in the liver and improved overall lipid balance.

Fatty liver disease is often described as a silent disease because people are not aware that excess fat is building up in liver cells.  The first signs are symptoms such as fatigue and abdominal, but if it progresses to cirrhosis, more serious problems such as jaundice, nausea, unexpected weight loss and swollen legs can arise.

MASLD is associated with metabolic problems such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.
