Constipated? Then adding B1 (thiamine) vitamins to your diet could get things moving again.
Scientists were surprised to discover that the vitamin had such a positive effect on our bowel movements because it hasn’t been associated with digestion before.
And it’s not only constipation that the B vitamins can help improve—they could also regulate diarrhoea and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), say researchers at LUM University in Italy.
They assessed the gut health of around 268,000 people, and the surprising stand-out discovery was the role of two genes that are linked to B1 vitamins. Upping the dose for 98,000 people in the study who were constipated helped improve bowel movement frequency.
It might not be a solution for everyone, though: people whose systems do not handle thiamine efficiently may not be helped.
