Like almost everything else, heart disease can start in the gut.
Scientists have discovered 15 gut bacteria that could be driving coronary artery disease (CAD) by causing inflammation, reducing protective bacteria, and triggering overactive metabolic pathways.
Although scientists have already recognised that gut bacteria can drive heart disease, a research team from Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul is the first to isolate the 15 bacteria responsible for CAD. The 15 bacteria can also reverse ‘good’ bacteria and make them attack the body.
The discovery underlines the importance of a healthy diet in countering heart disease.
