Tea is a healthier drink than coffee

Reading time: 1 minute

Tea and coffee are both supposed to be healthy drinks-but which is the healthier? According to one new piece of research, it’s tea, which reduces our risk of dying from any disease other than heart disease by 24 per cent.

Antioxidant-rich tea reduces blood pressure, and tea drinkers have a 24 per cent lower risk of dying from non-cardiovascular disease than coffee drinkers.

However, it’s not clear whether it’s the tea itself, or the lifestyle of the average tea drinker, which tends to be healthier than that of the coffee drinker, says Prof Nicolas Danchin.

Coffee drinkers smoke more and take less exercise-whereas the more cups the tea drinkers drank, the more exercise they tended to undertake.

Prof Danchin based his findings on a study of 131,401 people and their drinking and lifestyle habits.

Although he admits it’s hard to be sure whether the drink, or the lifestyle choices, have the more significant effect on health, it’s better to drink tea than coffee, and it’s even better than being a non-drinker of either, he says.
