Take a vit D supplement to improve your sleep

Reading time: 1 minute

If a good night’s sleep seems like a dream, start taking a vitamin D supplement, and your sleep patterns should soon start to improve.

The vitamin can also improve your memory and cognitive skills by around 13 percent, say researchers from Emory University in Atlanta.

They gave a daily 5000 IU supplement to 54 people, with an average age of 67, who had poor sleep patterns and mild memory issues—often seen as early warning signs of dementia.  Sleep problems are common among people with Alzheimer’s disease; half of those with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease report sleep disturbances, pointing to a two-way relationship between poor sleep and cognitive decline.

By the end of the study, the participants were scoring better on standard cognitive measurements than those who weren’t taking the supplement, and they were also enjoying a better night’s sleep.

It didn’t seem to matter which type of vitamin D was taken—both D2 and D3 worked equally as well.  And with dementia on the rise, taking one or more supplement a day could be a simple and inexpensive antidote.
