Strange micro-clots seen in blood of vaccinated and long Covid sufferers

Strange micro-clots have been detected in the blood of people who had a Covid vaccine or are suffering from long Covid.

These tiny clots form into sticky webs, known as neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), and they have been noted by pathologists who have carried out autopsies on people who died following a Covid infection.

Although micro-clotting seems to be a feature of long Covid, it has also been detected in blood samples taken from people who have had Covid vaccinations, say researchers from Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

Excess NET formation could cause serious—and even fatal—inflammatory and clotting problems, including severe infections, autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis.  A cluster of micro-clots can also block tiny blood vessels and reduce oxygen flow,

Using advanced screening techniques and AI, the researchers examined blood samples taken from around 200 participants, 94 percent of whom had been given a Covid jab, and compared them against healthy volunteers who were not suffering from long Covid.

The Covid group had more, and larger, micro-clots in their blood, and the researchers suspect they could be responsible for long Covid symptoms.

In 2021, the researchers at the university were the first to identify micro-clots among people who had suffered from a Covid infection or had a vaccination.
