Eat more seaweed or take supplements—your nervous system may thank you one day.
Seaweed contains antioxidants, known as Ecklonia cava polyphenols, that support neuron activity and dopamine, a neurotransmitter that controls motor skills and cognitive function.
The supplements can also protect against Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that’s triggered by the loss of dopamine, say researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University.
They tested the impact of the seaweed polyphenols on Parkinson’s cells, and discovered they combated the disease’s progress and stopped the productive of reactive oxygen species that cause nerve death.
