Reverse your biological age with this one tweak to your diet

Reading time: 2 minutes

You can start reversing your biological age in just four weeks by making just one tweak to your diet.

Eating more vegetables—and less animal protein—changes our body’s biomarkers that indicate our biological age, which is often very different from our chronological age, which is measured in the years since our birth.

Changes in our biomarkers can happen quickly, researchers from the University of Sydney discovered when they tested three different diets on a group of 104 people aged between 65 and 75.  Their biomarkers—which included levels of cholesterol, insulin, and C-reactive protein levels, indicators of inflammation—were measured before and after the study.

One group continued to eat their usual diet, and the others started to eat either omnivorous diets, with half of the protein coming from animal sources and the remainder from plants, or semi-vegetarian diets, in which 70 percent of the protein came from plant sources.

Within those categories, participants were also assigned either a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet or a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. This created four diet groups: omnivorous high-fat (OHF), omnivorous high-carbohydrate (OHC), semi-vegetarian high-fat (VHF), and semi-vegetarian high-carbohydrate (VHC).

The biomarkers in the group that continued to eat their usual diet didn’t change, but the other three groups all showed reductions in biological age markers. The strongest change was in the OHC group, which followed an omnivorous diet that was higher in carbohydrates and lower in fat. In that group, 14 percent of energy came from protein, 28-29 percent from fat, and 53 percent from carbohydrates.

The researchers were surprised to see changes happen in just four weeks—but they say they can’t be sure if following one of the diets long term would translate into a longer life.
