If you’re having radiation therapy for your cancer, drink a glass of red wine first. Apparently, it makes the treatment more effective-and the day may come when the wine’s active ingredient, resveratrol, could be recognised as a cancer fighter in its own right.
Melanoma, the skin cancer, and prostate cancer cells are both more susceptible to radiotherapy if the patient has first drunk a glass of red wine or taken resveratrol supplements.
In a laboratory experiment, researchers from Missouri University treated lines of melanoma cancer cells with resveratrol alone or with resveratrol and radiotherapy. The resveratrol killed 44 per cent of the cells, but 66 per cent died when radiotherapy was added.
Earlier experiments on prostate cancer cells achieved similar results.
Right now, the researchers say there isn’t enough evidence for people to ditch conventional therapy in favour of reservatrol, but perhaps that may change when more data is collected.
