Put sauce on your barbecue food for those antioxidants

Reading time: 1 minute

Barbecue season is here (well, sort of) – and here’s a tip from the world of medicine. Slap plenty of sauce on the meat and fish before you put them on the grill, and you’ll be getting a rich source of antioxidants. Even the sauces and marinades you buy in the shops are rich in antioxidants, say researchers from the University of Western Ontario. They analysed a variety of well-known brands, and found they all offered health-giving benefits. Most that were tested included in their ingredients jerk sauce, garlic and herb, honey garlic, roasted red pepper, lemon pepper garlic, sesame ginger teriyaki and green seasoning. And as foods rich in antioxidants help prevent cardiovascular disease, cancers, neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, your barbecue could become an important part of your health regime.
