We all know that pure orange juice and other citrus juices are good for us – but they’re even better for us than we thought. Scientists have discovered a more accurate way of measuring their goodness and have found their antioxidant levels are 10 times higher than previous results had shown.
All the natural, 100 per cent citrus juices that are commercially available – including orange, lemon, grapefruit and mandarin – deliver 10 times higher levels of antioxidants than previous tests had suggested.
Researchers from the University of Granada have developed a more accurate way of measuring the goodness from juices. Using their global antioxidant response (GAR) measure, they can analyse the liquid and fibre found in the small and large intestines, whereas previous tests had measured only the liquid in the small intestine.
The GAR analysis should detect higher antioxidant levels in other foods, too, say the researchers.
