Processed food alters the brain

Reading time: 1 minute

Eating processed food changes the structure of your brain and could explain why people get addicted.

Scientists from the University of Helsinki examined around 30,00 scans to see how ultra-processed food (UPF) affects the brain.

The changes could explain overeating and addiction, but the researchers say they can’t prove any connection.

Not all processed food had an effect. Vegetable-based food—such as frozen peas—didn’t change the brain, and only UPFs, which contain industrial additives and chemically altered ingredients, had an impact.
