Novo Nordisk, the drug giant that makes the weight loss drug Ozempic, is facing a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit from users who claim it is causing thyroid cancer.
The Ozempic Thyroid Cancer Lawsuit is claiming that the manufacturer has not provided sufficient warning about the cancer risk even though animal studies have discovered a clear connection.
Around 15 million Americans are taking a GLP-1 drug such as Ozempic, and thousands of them are claiming the drug has caused their thyroid cancer. Another ongoing claim against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, which manufactures Mounjaro, has been mounted by people who say the drugs have caused severe gastrointestinal problems and vision loss.
The cancer claimants face several hurdles: human studies haven’t replicated the thyroid cancer risk seen in animals, and people with thyroid problems have been strongly warned not to take the drugs.
The other lawsuit, which has attracted more than 3,800 claimants, say the GLP-1 drugs have caused a range of serious health problems, including stomach paralysis, which has resulted in permanent stomach obstruction and persistent vomiting, vision loss that has caused sudden blindness in one eye, and other severe side effects such as deep vein thrombosis and necrotizing pancreatitis.
GLP-1 drugs, which were originally developed to tackle type 2 diabetes, work by mimicking a natural gut hormone to regulate blood sugar, slow digestion, and increase feelings of fullness.
