Overweight people who are ‘big-boned’ might be right after all

Reading time: 1 minute

Overweight people who say they are ‘big-boned’ might have a point after all. Our thigh bones might have a bearing on how heavy we get, researchers say.
Studying a range of skeletons, researchers from the North Carolina State University have discovered that the width of the shaft of the thigh bone, or femur, is related to a person’s weight.
The heavier a person is, the wider is the shaft of his or her femur, they have discovered. It could be that the femur has become more robust over time because it has a greater weight to support – but it could also be that the person put on the weight because the shaft made them walk more awkwardly in the first place.
