Around 1 percent of older people suffered a serious, life-threatening reaction within a month of having an mRNA Covid-19 jab, a major review has discovered.
Reactions included a major heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), encephalitis, stroke, or pulmonary embolism, a study involving more than six million people has discovered. DVT and pulmonary embolism were the most common reactions.
In all, 63,880 people suffered a life-threatening reaction within 28 days of vaccination, a figure that excludes reactions that happened after the study had finished.
Researchers from Brown University School of Public Health tracked reactions of 6.38 million people, with an average age of 76, after they had been given either the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine. More of the reactions happened to those given the Pfizer jab, suggesting the Moderna version may be safer, the researchers conclude.
