Obesity is usually a symptom of a bad diet—and it’s now directly linked to 13 different types of cancer that account for 40 percent of all cancer cases.
Cancer deaths that are linked to obesity have trebled in the past 20 years, say researchers from Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Centre.
They analysed more than 33,000 deaths associated with the 13 cancers and found the rate had increased from 3.73 per million in 1999 to 13.52 per million by 2020. There were steep increases among women, older adults, black people, Native Americans and rural populations.
