Nutritional drink proven to keep Alzheimer’s patients mentally sharp

Reading time: 1 minute

A simple nutritional drink could help Alzheimer’s sufferers stay mentally sharp in the early stages of the disease. The drink, Souvenaid, has already produced promising results in one trial with 225 Alzheimer’s patients, whose verbal skills improved after taking it for three months. Now researchers from Rush University Medical Centre want to find out if the same improvements can be recorded in a major, nationwide trial across the US. They are recruiting 500 people who are already taking some Alzheimer’s medication; half will be given four ounces of Souvenaid for six months and the rest will be given a similar liquid, but without Souvenaid’s nutrients. Souvenaid is manufactured by Nutricia. (Source: Rush University Medical Center, January 25, 2010; for information on Souvenaid, visit: http://www.souvenaid.com/).
