Nearly 700,000 patients complain about bad care in the NHS every year

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is generating more complaints from patients than ever. The service is today receiving around 480 written complaints a day, or around 175,000 a year-while another 500,000 cases go unreported every year.

The figures represent an 8 per cent increase on the previous year, but patient watchdog group Healthwatch England reckons the real situation is even worse, with 500,000 cases of unsatisfactory patient care going unreported over the past two years.

The latest figures, prepared by the Health and Social Care Information Centre, focus only on complains that have been received in writing. Most complaints relate to in-house care while people have been in hospital.
