Around 60 percent of American women will be suffering from cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 2050, researchers predict.
Around half of American women have CVD today, and this includes one in three American women aged 22 to 44 who may already be living with some form of heart disease, which includes high blood pressure and diabetes. Obesity and a diet of processed food are two of the main drivers of the surge in cases.
A major position paper by the American Heart Association also forecasts that by 2050, nearly 32 percent of girls ages between two and 19 will be obese.
The predictions follow an important statement the AHA issued last autumn where they recognised that inflammation is the main cause of heart disease, and that the ‘blocked pipe’ theory—where LDL cholesterol closes arteries—is a downstream response.
