Mobile phones could be banned from all schools

Reading time: 1 minute

Schools throughout Europe could soon bar the use of mobile (cell) phones and wi-fi networks. An influential Council of Europe committee is urging all governments to act immediately to stop the potential damage caused by electromagnetic radiation to the health of children and their developing brains.
The Council’s environment committee is also concerned about the use of cordless phones and baby monitors in the home.
Its members are calling for an immediate ban after studying the latest evidence, which they say suggests that mobile phones and wireless networks are ‘potentially harmful’, especially to children. The radiation may cause cancer, and could affect a child’s developing brain, they were told.
They have recommended that all EU member states should:
o set thresholds for levels of long-term exposure to microwaves emitted by mobile phones
o introduce clear labelling on products that outlines potential hazards
o ban all mobile phones and wireless networks in schools
o run information campaigns – aimed at children – about the potential health risks of mobile phones
o increase research into safer mobile technology.
