MMR doctor sues journal for defamation over autism fraud claim

Reading time: 1 minute

Andrew Wakefield, the former doctor at the heart of the MMR-autism controversy, is suing the prestigious British Medical Journal and investigative journalist Brian Deer for “false and defamatory” allegations against him.
He has issued a writ against the BMJ’s editor Fiona Godlee and Deer for falsely alleging that he had manipulated and falsified data and diagnoses for his 1998 paper, published in The Lancet, which had first suggested a possible association between the vaccine and autism.
The allegations were made in the BMJ in January 2011 after Wakefield had been struck off for serious professional misconduct over the way he collected data for the study.
Mr Wakefield has filed the suit in Austin, Texas where he now lives.
