Med diet prevents stroke, say new guidelines

Reading time: 1 minute

Eating a healthy Mediterranean diet, exercising and not smoking will dramatically reduce your chances of ever suffering a stroke.

New guidelines for stroke prevention issued by the American Heart Association emphasises the importance of a healthy diet. In particular, the Mediterranean diet – high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, poultry and fish – is the recommended approach. Red meat and dairy should be kept to a minimum, the AHA advises.

Smoking and even second-hand smoke should be avoided, and introducing a little exercise can help prevent high blood pressure (hypertension), the principal cause of stroke.
