Health experts have said the standard two doses of the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine are not powerful enough to protect people when they are living in close proximity, as with students on a university campus.
Paul Barreira, the university’s director of health services, said the rise in cases is worrying. “I’m actually more concerned now than I was during any time of the outbreak,” he told The Harvard Crimson newspaper.
The first cases were reported last February, and numbers have steadily been rising since then. Health authorities have confirmed that all the students who have contracted mumps had been vaccinated, and received the recommended two doses of the MMR.
America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated the mumps component of the MMR is between 76 to 95 per cent effective.
