Loo scrolling—it can give you piles

Reading time: 1 minute

We’ve all heard of ‘doom scrolling’.  But there’s also ‘loo scrolling’—it’s people who read their smartphones in the toilet.  Many of us do this, and we are much more likely to develop piles (haemorrhoids) as a result.

People who scroll while they’re sitting on the toilet are almost 50 percent more likely to have piles, say researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in the United States.

Scrolling through the news on your phone means you’re spending too long in the toilet, and this can strain anal tissue.  ‘Toilet scrollers’ are spending more than five minutes on the toilet, while those who leave their phones at the door have an average visit of around three minutes.

The researchers studied the toilet habits of 125 people who were undergoing endoscopy screening.  Two-thirds said they read their smartphones while in the toilet, and this increased the risk of piles by 46 percent.
