Lemon juice is a natural anti-viral that can block the spread of noroviruses, which are extremely contagious and cause violent and sudden diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
Outbreaks of gastroenteritis are often reported in hospitals, cruise ships and schools, and the viruses are usually spread from contaminated hands or food.
The citrate from lemon juice binds with norovirus particles and stops them binding-which means they cannot spread. Just putting a few drops of lemon juice on food, surfaces and on the hands could stop the virus spreading, say researchers from the University of Heidelberg.
Earlier research found that other fruit extracts, such as orange or pomegranate juice, also had anti-viral properties.
