Laptop PCs with wi-fi could be damaging men’s fertility

Reading time: 1 minute

Men using laptop computers could be affecting their fertility. Researchers think that the damage is being done by wi-fi – the wireless connection that most laptops use to access the web and emails.
Wi-fi seems to affect sperm motility (movement) – which may prevent it from reaching the egg in the womb – and the genetic code it carries.
A research team from Argentina and the US placed pots of sperm next to a laptop connected to the internet via wi-fi and another in a general ‘wi-fi zone’, but not near a laptop. After just four hours, the sperm placed by the laptop was showing damage.
The researchers say that their results warrant further investigation.
Their findings support earlier case reports of laptops burning the testicles, which may well affect sperm quality.
The simple remedy is to put a laptop on a desk, the researchers say.
