It’s healthier to be by the seaside

We all like to be by the seaside—and now scientists have discovered why: it’s better for our health.

People who live near the sea are generally healthier, new research involving more than 15,000 people from 14 European countries has discovered.

But don’t despair if you live miles from the coast.  Visiting the seaside can also give your health a boost, say researchers from the University of Vienna.

“Everybody seems to benefit from being near the seaside, not just the wealthy,” said Sandra Geiger, one of the researchers.  

Even people living in her landlocked country of Austria may benefit from just being near any type of water, such as a river or lake.  “We are starting to appreciate the similar health benefits offered by inland waters such as lakes and natural pools,” she added.
