It’s all in the gut, part 1: link to MS discovered

Reading time: 1 minute

The next challenge is to understand what came first: did the MS alter the gut ‘universe’, or microbiome, or did a badly-functioning gut cause the MS, say researchers from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

They’ve established that MS sufferers have lower levels of good bacteria that help the body process healthy foods, and they suspect a similar imbalance would be seen in the guts of all sufferers of a chronic autoimmune disorder, such as arthritis.

The researchers made their discovery after they examined samples from MS patients and compared them to those taken from healthy people.

Now they want to take their research further and study larger groups of MS sufferers.
