Intermittent fasting beats calorie-counting for losing weight

Reading time: 1 minute

What’s the best way to lose weight?  Eat less seems to be the obvious thing to do, but there are ways of eating less, and two diets have just been tested against each other.

The fashionable intermittent fasting—where you eat far less for a few days a week—has been championed by celebs such as Jennifer Aniston, and it seems to be slightly more effective than the more traditional calorie-counting.

Intermittent fasters lost 7.6 percent of their body weight in three months compared to the 5 percent achieved by the calorie counters, according to one study by researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who road-tested the two approaches on a group of 165 people who were overweight.

The intermittent fasters limited their usual calorie intake by 80 percent three days a week, and ate normally the other four days, while the calorie counters limited themselves to 1,640 calories a day when normal intake is more like 2,500 calories.
