IBS is a real disease, and it’s not ‘all in the head’

Reading time: 1 minute

Irritable bowel disease (IBS) is a real disease, and it’s not “all in the head” as many doctors believe, new research has concluded.
IBS affects up to 20 per cent of people, who complain of symptoms ranging from bloating, cramping, abdominal pain and constipation, and yet they are rarely taken seriously by doctors.
This is often because IBS doesn’t follow the classic pattern of a disease with a definite cause-but that’s because it isn’t a disease, but a term for a group of problems, say researchers from the Mayo Clinic.
IBS is the result of several disturbed motor and sensory processes, which have been affected by irritants, such as certain foods, poor gut flora, and over-production of bile and fatty acids.
