HRT increases ovarian cancer risk

Reading time: 1 minute

Even short-term use of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) by women going through the menopause dramatically increases the risk of them developing ovarian cancer.

After taking the drug for a couple of years, women are 40 per cent more likely to develop the cancer than women who never took HRT.

This is the latest of a series of dire warnings about HRT, and yet around six million women in the UK and the USA still take it in order to help offset the worst symptoms of the menopause.

Researchers from Oxford University, who looked at 52 studies that involved 21,488 women, say that HRT will produce one extra case of ovarian cancer for every 1,000 women taking it longer than five years, and that there will be one death from the cancer in every 1,700 women taking it.
