How you can protect yourself against bowel cancer-and possibly breast cancer, researchers reveal

Reading time: 1 minute

Colorectal cancer-more commonly known as bowel or colon cancer-kills more than 600,000 people every year, and yet is completely avoidable, researchers have said this week. And their discovery could hold the key to preventing breast cancer, too.
Foods that contain resistant starch kill pre-cancerous cells and reduce inflammation that could also promote cancer, say researchers from the University of Colorado. The cancer-fighting foods include peas, beans, green bananas, sushi rice and pasta salad.
However, you get the healing effects only when the food is at room temperature or below when you eat it. “As soon as you heat it, the resistant starch is gone. But consumed correctly, it appears to kill pre-cancerous cells in the bowel,” says lead researcher Prof Janine Higgins.
The researchers think that foods rich in resistant starch could also reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Right now their discoveries have been made only with laboratory rats, but the researchers are confident they would see the same effects in humans. In the meantime, start eating the sushi.
