Buddhism is good for you—especially if you’re stressed or depressed.
Following the religion’s five major ethical principles can counter feelings of depression, and the more closely you follow the precepts, the less depressed you may feel, say researchers from the Chiang Mai University in Thailand.
They surveyed 644 adults about their levels of stress, depression and neuroticism; although 93 percent said they were Buddhist, those who were the most serious about following the five precepts also reported the lowest levels of mental issues.
Following the precepts provides a buffer against the worst feelings of stress and depression, said researcher Nahathai Wongpakaran.
The five principles are: do not kill or steal; don’t indulge in sexual misconduct; don’t lie and avoid intoxicants.
