High-fibre diet could slow progress of prostate cancer

Reading time: 1 minute

A high-fibre could stop prostate cancer from progressing, especially when it’s been diagnosed in its early stages. The diet may explain the differences between Asian cultures, where the cancer is rarely lethal, and Western ones, researchers reckon.
Significant differences have been seen in the progress of the disease between subjects given inositol hexaphosphate (IP6), a major component of high-fibre diets, and those who weren’t. IP6 stopped tumours growing and progression, say researchers from the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
They think that high-fibre foods interfere with the tumour’s ability to make new blood vessels and metabolize glucose.
Although the research results are exciting, they have been seen only in laboratory mice at this stage, and the next phase will probably be human studies.
