High doses of vitamin D stop the second heart attack

Reading time: 1 minute

If you’ve had a heart attack, start supplementing with D3 vitamins.  The vitamin could halve your risk of a second attack.

Most of us have low levels of vitamin D—usually because we don’t get out into the sun enough—and the deficiency is linked to heart attack.

A research team from Intermountain Healthcare tested the impact of the vitamin on 630 heart attack survivors: one group was not given supplements, and the other was given very high doses to raise their blood vitamin levels.  At the start, 85 percent of the participants had sub-optimal levels.

The vitamin group was given daily D3 doses of 5,000 international units (IU), around nine times the recommended dose of 600 IU, for six years.

Although 107 participants suffered a second heart attack, the risk was halved in the group taking the vitamin.
