Neon Roberts-the boy with brain cancer whose mother tried to block conventional treatment-is deteriorating daily. The hospital treating him has won a custody order to continue the experimental treatment, and has succeeded in limiting Sally Roberts’s access to her son. As a last resort, she has asked Prime Minister David Cameron to intervene.
Sally says that Neon has been included in a clinical trial, the PNET, against her wishes, and she has been denied regular access to him, although he keeps asking for her.
She says he has become uncoordinated, forgetful, has lost weight and is suffering from chronic fatigue. Sally lost a High Court action to block conventional treatment, and especially radiotherapy, which she feared could affect his mental abilities.
Neon is finishing the course of radiotherapy for his medulloblastoma brain cancer, and has started chemotherapy, which follows the treatment protocols set out in the experimental PNET programme. In her letter to Mr Cameron, she says Neon is being used as a guinea pig when there are known safer treatment options available.
She is seeking to raise lb250,000 from donations to fund a High Court appeal against his treatment, and instead take him to the US to begin proton beam therapy and other alternatives.
