If you want to reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease, go out and help someone less fortunate.
Volunteering to help people in your community helps keep you mentally sharp as you get older, and it keeps you physically active too.
Researchers at the University of California at Davis assessed the physical and mental wellbeing of 2,476 recruits with an average age of 74, 43 percent of whom had volunteered for local charity work.
Those who did volunteer work several times a week had better cognitive and motion skills—both strong indicators that they were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or dementia, the researchers say.
