Heart failure patients also helped by taking fish oil supplements

Reading time: 1 minute

Heart failure – where the heart cannot properly pump blood – is the latest condition that could be helped by the supplements. Death and hospital treatment could be reduced by 9 per cent if patients started supplementing, the American Heart Association (AHA) states in its latest advisory statement on heart health.

Heart patients should be taking around 100mg a day, says advisory committee chairman Dr David Siscovick, but he says there’s no evidence to suggest that the supplements help prevent heart disease in the first place.

The recommendation to supplement with fish oils to prevent a second heart attack was first made by the AHA in 2002.

Around 19 million Americans take a fish oil supplement every day.
